Happy to report that spring showed up just as expected here in central Minnesota, not like some years where it hesitates and waits until late May. We have already been enjoying several spring bulbs, the perennials are waking up eager to be divided, and the early clematis are setting flower buds.
Yesterday I divided a few hostas, a golden millet, and moved around a few plants including a bleeding heart that was struggling with overbearing tree roots.
I am just over half way done with the big spring weeding and edging- several of our beds don't have edging, so I have to go out and do it by hand every spring. I've got most of the cool season crops growing already including kale, lettuce, peace, broccoli, cabbage, and onions. When the rain stops I plan on getting the brussel sprouts and some more lettuce planted. Already been harvesting kale, so more is needed to keep up.
The nice people at all local city compost, used their tractor to dump a load of mulch in our trailer. The kids helped me distribute it this week. Things are looking sharper than they were a few weeks ago.
We had to put the heater back in the green house for a few days, as lows were 36 degrees a few nights in a row. A lot of seedlings in there are germinating. I've got zinnia, nicotiana, hibiscus, celosia, brachyscome, felicia, lobelia, and ornamental kale going in the fun department, and tomatoes, peppers, malabar spinach (pictured) cucumbers, zucchini, and plenty of herbs including parsley (pictured), cilantro, marjoram, lemon balm, and basil in the edible department.
